The 287(g) program was established in 1996 as a partnership between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement.
The program might ring a bell as a program that used to be much more prominent in Arizona, allowing local authorities to check someone’s immigration status and enforce SB 1070, but has since been scaled back. The partnership continues, though, in Pinal and Yavapai counties, and in 19 other states.
Now, a new report from Stanford’s Center for Education Policy Analysis presents new evidence on the impact of those partnerships on immigrant communities using data on public school enrollment of Hispanic students. The researchers estimate ICE partnerships led to the displacement of 300,000 Hispanic students — many of them U.S. citizens.
