Arts Nonprofit To Host Talk On Phoenix-Guadalajara Cultural Exchange

A Phoenix-based nonprofit will host a public talk Wednesday as part of an annual artist exchange between Latin American artists from Phoenix and the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

Cala Alliance will host a talk with visual artist Diana Calderon about her experience during a six-week artist residency and cultural exchange this summer with the Guadalajara arts nonprofit PAOS GDL.

Calderón lived and worked in the house of the late Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco and made 30 prints, each representing a day of her experience during the cultural exchange, she said.

“It’s a 30-day diary of my experience in an abstract way,” Calderón said. “Living at the [Clemente’s] casa taller, I was very stimulated by its architecture, the angles and the windows.”

This was the second year one artist from each city participated in the exchange. Organizers plan to continue with the project next year, said Casandra Hernandez, director of Cala Alliance.

The talk is free and scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sagrado Galleria, 6437 S. Central Ave, in Phoenix.
