The U.S. State Department has awarded a contract for a new consulate compound in Nogales, Sonora.
Alabama-based BL Harbert International, L.L.C won the roughly $130 million construction contract in late August. That figure was within federal cost estimates. Consul General Virginia Staab said the whole facility will cost $203 million.
“I think it’s a really clear signal that we’re investing in Nogales and that we’re here to stay,” she added.
The consulate handles numerous tourist and work visa applications, a workload straining their current facility, according to Staab.
The compound will be near the current consular compound in Nogales, Sonora, on a 35,000 square-meter property, according to a solicitation document. A swimming pool was among the requested elements. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2021.
Harbert has also won sizable contracts for two other consular compounds in Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo in recent years, according to USASpending.gov.
