How Neighborhoods Bear The Cost Of City Tax Incentives

Tax incentives have been used by cities and states for years in the attempt to attract businesses and generate a newer revenue stream.

But critics have argued that the government is picking winners and losers, and the promised positive impact rarely, if ever, pans out. And Valley cities like Phoenix and Tempe have offered tax breaks that may transfer costs to certain neighborhoods and areas.

The Arizona Republic focused on a couple of Phoenix neighborhoods to try and measure the impact of Government Property Lease Excise Tax — or GPLET — agreements.

To talk about the story he worked on, Agnel Philip, data reporter for The Arizona Republic, joined The Show.

Steve Goldstein was a host at KJZZ from 1997 to 2022.
