Tuesday night the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt a strict seven-year sustainability plan.
The measure, passed on a 3-2 vote, would reduce carbon emissions from county operations by 50 percent in the next seven years, mirroring the Paris Climate Agreement’s 2025 goal.
Since the last update to sustainability plans in 2013, the county said it has saved $14 million.
The bulk of those avoided costs, $8 million, come from energy efficiency improvements. The county also said it saved $80,125 by buying solar power instead of traditionally-produced electricity.
The newly adopted plan also outlines ways the county plans to reduce potable water usage 15 percent by 2025 and says it will give purchase preference to environmentally-friendly office products and equipment.
