If you still have pumpkins laying around the house, you may not want to toss them in the trash. Those leftover jack-o-lanterns can serve as compost.
Norma Cable works with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. The organization is hosting a “pumpkin smash” this weekend.
“Pumpkin is valuable compost for the garden soil that really shouldn’t end up in the landfill," Cable said. "We will get them started on the compost process and that happens by way of smashing them, sometimes launching them with a slingshot or there are several mallet stations where you can just smash it yourself.”
The event is free and runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Las Milpitas de Cottonwood Community Farm in Tucson.
In addition to pumpkin smashing, families can enjoy activities for the kids, live music and food trucks.
