One of Arizona’s busiest rest stops is open for business again after undergoing renovations. The Arizona Department of Transportation plans to have all state rest stops upgraded by the end of 2019.

The Sacaton Rest Area on Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix has been reopened after being upgraded. Renovations to rest areas in Arizona has been an ongoing project since 2013.

ADOT spokesman Tom Herrmann said some rest areas have been around for as long as 50 years and are in need of upgrades.

“The idea here is to make sure that all of the rest areas are functioning properly. That the things underground that you don’t see when you come in, the water systems and the septic systems and all of those things are in proper working order. So when you show up at a rest area all the services are there for you," Herrmann said.

Herrmann said ADOT will continue renovating rest stops one at a time, each scheduled for about six months of repairs. Canoa Ranch Area on the Interstate 19 is scheduled to close Thursday for renovations.
