It’s no secret that newspapers are on the decline. But a new study from the University of North Carolina’s School of Media and Journalism shows that the problem is far more widespread than we previously thought.
Penny Muse Abernathy, who led the year-long study, said they found roughly 1,800 communities that had a local newspaper in 2004 don’t have one now.
And, more than 1,300 communities have totally lost news coverage.
The Show spoke with her more about their main findings and how this decline in local news, in particular, is affecting our democracy.
