Arizona Tribal Members Taking Their History Into Their Own Hands

photo of Apache man by Edward Curtis
Arizona Highways
In this photo made by Edward Curtis in 1906, a White Mountain Apache man stands on the bank of Black River.

There are 22 federally recognized Native American tribes in Arizona — combined, they have more than 400,000 members.

“Indigenous Arizona” is the cover story in November’s edition of Arizona Highways Magazine.

Annette McGivney wrote the piece — she’s a freelance journalist based in Flagstaff and she joined The Show to talk about it.
