MEXICO CITY — On Dec. 1, Mexico will have a new president, and Arizona governor Doug Ducey plans to attend to the inauguration ceremony in Mexico City. Ducey will also visit his counterpart in Sonora in this two-stop trip to Mexico.
Governor Ducey will attend the Arizona-Mexico Commission's summit in Hermosillo on Friday, Nov. 30. He will meet with Sonora’s governor, Claudia Pavlovich.
The summit will focus on innovation, technology and workforce. This is the governor’s first trade mission since the November election.
Juan Ciscomani is Governor Ducey’s senior advisor for regional and international affairs, and said part of the discussion will include trade and the development of the tech parks on both sides of the border, while promoting continuous collaboration with their Sonoran counterpart.
“Governor Pavlovich has three more years, we have four more years, so we are going to be working with her,” Ciscomani said.
The governor will fly to Mexico City afterwards for the presidential inauguration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“This is a pretty historic event that we wanted to make sure that we would be there, letting him (López Obrador) know that Arizona is open for business,” said the advisor.
Ciscomani said the trip is a must for Arizona’s success.
“This is an important relationship to us, number one trading partner to Arizona, so for the governor it was a no-brainer to be there and start making the connections,” said Ciscomani.
The governor’s advisor says they’re planning to hold meetings in Mexico City with other U.S. governors and new Mexican secretaries, as well as with the private sector.
“We may not agree with some of the things that are happening (with López Obrador), but the main point for us to have an open dialogue, because that’s how you get things done,” said Ciscomani.
