The Sonoran government of Gov. Claudia Pavlovich reportedly directed millions of public dollars to front companies that then provided cash for 2016 political campaigns.
That’s according to an investigation published last Wednesday by the nonprofit Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity.
Sonora was one of several states controlled by the Institutional Revolution Party that diverted more than $30 million to allegedly support the organization’s candidates for governor. The New York Times first reported on the scheme in the Mexican state of Chihuahua in late 2017.
In a statement released last Thursday, the Sonoran government denied the story's findings. It also said it would investigate the allegations "to leave no doubt about the handling of those resources."
