Mexico Requests U.S. To Investigate Use Of Tear Gas At Border

MEXICO CITY — Members of the Central American caravan confronted Mexican and American authorities in the Tijuana-San Diego border on Sunday, trying to gain access to the U.S. The Mexican government is now requesting its American counterparts to investigate the incidents.

The Mexican government sent a diplomatic note to the U.S. embassy expressing its concerns after American federal agents launched tear gas at the border in the San Diego-Tijuana region.

The diplomatic letter requested that the U.S. investigates the incident, where "non-lethal weapons" were shot from the U.S. to the Mexican side.

On Sunday, hundreds of Central American migrants approached the border wall. Customs and Border Protection said some threw rocks and bottles at American federal agents on the U.S. side prompting the tear gas response.

The Mexican government says it has already deported nearly 100 Hondurans involved in the incidents.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This headline has been modified to correct that tear gas was used at the border.
