The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a $300,000 settlement Wednesday with the family of a man who died in former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails in 2015.
According to the lawsuit, 27-year-old Anthony Singleton died from opiate and alcohol withdrawal two weeks after being taken into custody. Singleton's mother filed the wrongful death suit in 2016.
During Arpaio's 24-year tenure, there were about $85 million worth of claims paid in connection with the sheriff's office.
Spokesman Fields Moseley said the county hopes the settlement allows Singleton's family to move forward and the county to continue focusing on improving its complex jail system.
Half the money will be given to Singleton's mother and attorneys. The other half with be distributed periodically to Singleton's three children once they reach 18 years old.
