Fresh Snow Coats Flagstaff, Closing Schools, Opening Ski Slopes

People living in or near Flagstaff woke up to a winter wonderland this morning. More than six inches of fresh snow glittered on the ground as the sun rose.

The Show caught up with Jillian Quintanal as she was getting ready to head out and put that fresh snow to good use on the slopes. She’s president of NAU’s Ski and Snowboard Club, and a bunch of their members plan to meet at the slopes, where more runs are open now that there’s enough snow.

"We’ll find like small little areas where there’s a lot of powder and people can practice flips or spins," she said. "And it’s nice because it’s low consequence, just because it is softer during these powder days."

With Flagstaff Unified schools closed today, and all the excitement about the snow, Jillian said the slopes will probably be pretty busy. So we let her get on her way so she can get to all the snowboarding and skiing she plans to do.

If you're already pulling on your parka to head to Flagstaff, be mindful of road conditions: I-17 northbound was backed up Friday morning due to an accident. And additional snow showers are expected throughout the day, with another storm forecast for late Saturday night.
