Prescott City Council Votes 6-1 To Call For Rep. Stringer's Resignation

The Prescott City Council voted 6-1 on Tuesday to call for state Rep. David Stringer’s resignation following his latest controversial remarks on race. Stringer made similar comments this summer, but easily won re-election last month.

Stringer told Arizona State University students on Friday that African-American immigrants “don’t blend in.” The Republican lawmaker also said Somali immigrants do not look like “every other kid.”

Following the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli said he was extremely disappointed in Stringer. He called for his immediate resignation to allow for a suitable candidate to take his place in 2019.

Mengarelli also said Stringer does not represent the values of Prescott.

Councilman Phil Goode was the only member to vote no. He said it is the public’s duty to vote for Stringer’s resignation, not the council’s.

Stringer has refused to comment since the meeting.
