The Diamondbacks have traded star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, a 6-time All-Star and 3-time Gold Glove winner. He was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly and infielder Andrew Young.
Goldschmidt had one year remaining on his contract, and the team had been unable to come to terms with him on a new deal.
Team president Derrick Hall said, "This was an extremely difficult decision given how much Paul has meant to our team both on and off the field."
The move is part of an overhaul for the franchise. It comes one day after ace pitcher Patrick Corbin signed with the Washington Nationals. And star outfielder A.J. Pollock is also likely to depart in free agency.
