What Can Be Done To Prevent Another E. Coli Outbreak?

Just before Thanksgiving, an E. coli outbreak led government officials to announce that romaine lettuce shouldn’t be eaten at all. That was not long after a prior E. coli problem that led to illnesses in different parts of the country.

FDA rules related to agricultural water standards were on the verge of being implemented, but they’ve been pushed back and compliance dates extended by four years.

So what are the current conditions? How preventable are the outbreaks?

To talk about it, The Show was joined by Trevor Suslow. He's vice president of food safety for the Produce Marketing Association and a longtime extension research specialist at the University of California-Davis.
