A recent Pew Research poll shows two-thirds of Americans, both Republicans and Democrats support U.S. trade, but their views on tariffs have diverged.
Eighty-one percent of Democrats think tariffs are a bad idea, while less than 26 percent of Republicans agree.
But, when asked whether he thinks tariffs will work, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake doubted it will help even if the United States wins the tariff war.
"Not at all, not all. Nobody wins trade wars," said Flake. "Each country involved in a trade war just gets poorer."
Flake said President Donald Trump is confused on how trade and tariffs work and he hopes a trade agreement can be reached with China, despite what the president believes.
