State Department To Auction Off Safety Deposit Box Contents Friday

The contents of abandoned safety deposit boxes are going up for auction Friday morning by the Arizona Department of Revenue.

Spokesman Ed Greenberg said the boxes have everything from wedding rings, vintage coins, to cash from bank accounts, tax refunds, and uncashed payroll checks.

He said they've exhausted their efforts to find the rightful owners, so now it's time to convert box loads of valuables to bank notes.

"The proceeds from the items sold through the auction are then transferred to a custodial account," said Greenberg, who assured that it "remains in this account and available to the rightful owners for the claiming."

Safety deposit box owners can still claim the proceeds raised, which will remain in state custody.

Bidders interested in the auction items can show up in person or bid online.

The auction runs from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Friday.
