An Arizona lawmaker has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
State Rep. David Cook, a Republican from Globe, was stopped Wednesday evening after a highway patrol officer observed his car drifting between lanes.
The report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper describes Cook as very intoxicated and uncooperative.
Cook at first handed the officer his legislative ID instead of his driver’s license, refused to get out of the car and then, as he did, told the officer “Do you know what you’re doing son? You’re making a mistake.”
Cook had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit and was charged with an extreme DUI, which carries a 30-day jail term.
The incoming Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers says he’s disappointed and saddened by the news, but is waiting until he gets more information to take action.
Cook had been assigned to the House's Public Safety Committee for the upcoming legislative session.
