MEXICO CITY — The Mexican Senate ratified a new ambassador to serve in the United States. And it will be the first time that a woman takes that role.

Martha Bárcena is becoming the first female ambassador of Mexico in the United States. She has 40 years of experience as a diplomat.

Bárcena has worked with the United Nations, and has previously served as ambassador in Denmark and Turkey. She will be in charge of coordinating the bilateral efforts of the recently inaugurated president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with the White House.

The United States has not assigned a head of its diplomatic office in Mexico since ambassador Roberta Jacobson resigned in March.

Rodrigo Cervantes was KJZZ’s bureau chief in Mexico City from 2016 to 2021.
