The Arizona Cardinals fired their head coach after one year on the job. Steve Wilks was let go Monday morning after a season-ending loss on Sunday.

Team owner Michael Bidwill said the team started off poorly and did not improve.

"So when you look at not only the record, but the lack of competitiveness — the fact that we went backwards on offense and defense — looking at his plan for 2019, I didn’t feel it was a plan I wanted to get behind," Bidwill said.

Wilks coached with the Carolina Panthers before the Cardinals hired him last year.

Here in Arizona, things fell apart quickly. The offensive line struggled and then lost multiple players to injuries. Only rookie center Mason Cole made it through the year. Rookie Josh Rosen took over at quarterback four games into the season.

The team's offense finished last in the league.

The defense also struggled. Arizona lost nine games by double digits.

The Cardinals were 1-7 at home, their worst record since moving to Arizona.

With Sunday’s loss, the Cardinals will have the No. 1 pick in 2019’s college draft.
