22-Mile South Mountain Freeway Project Scheduled To Open In 2019

The largest freeway project in Arizona’s history is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway will connect the West Valley to the southeast.

The 22-mile corridor extends from the existing Loop 202 in Chandler through the Ahwatukee Foothills and part of the South Mountain Preserve to connect with the I-10 at 59th Avenue.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reported in December the project is almost two-thirds done.

The freeway was first envisioned in a 1985 voter-approved transportation plan.

Legal battles over environmental and community concerns prevented construction until late 2017.

The project will cost an estimated $1.9 billion.
