As the partial shutdown of the federal government continues the Navajo Nation along with many other tribes who rely on federal programs are hurting.
The shutdown has hindered the ability of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to plow 1,600 miles of paved roads and grate nearly 6,000 miles of dirt roads. Many Navajo don’t have running water or electricity and so have to haul water and wood.
President Russell Begaye says this has been the tribe’s most urgent issue.
