Into the fourth week of the longest government shutdown in U.S. History, Arizona’s congressional delegation continues to fight along party lines.
Democrat Rep. Greg Stanton said congress has done its job, and that the White House is holding up the government.
“We’ve passed a series of appropriations bills that fund this government at the level that the Republican Senate had voted on,” Stanton said.
But Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego said he believes compromise, which would add more money for border security — without funding for President Donald Trump's requested border wall — is still possible to re-open the government some time soon.
“We believe that there is good ways to have good border security," Gallego said, "but it has to be decided on an operational basis, not just on a whim of a campaign.”
Republican Rep. David Schweikert said Congress could get more than just a wall built to secure the border.
“Maybe it’s an opportunity to do something a little bigger, with screening at the ports of entry, build the physical barrier where it’s needed, move the technology in the more rugged and rural areas," said Schweikert.
