The United States has strict rules on how soon after leaving office a retired or defeated member of Congress can officially lobby his or her former colleagues.
But many firms are eager to scoop up those politicos — even with a two-year waiting period — because of the relationships they’ve forged and the inside knowledge they’ve developed.
Professor Amy McKay of the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom researches lobbying in the U.S. and how much of an effect lobbying by former members of Congress has on policy. She joined The Show to talk about her findings.
