Arizona High Court Expects To Rule On Business Owners' Religious Rights

Tuesday morning, Arizona’s high court is expected to decide just how far a business owner can go in refusing to serve customers based on their sexual orientation.

Attorneys for Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka plan to argue before the Arizona Supreme Court that their clients are devout Christians and forcing them to print wedding invitations or other material at their print shop is a violation of their religious beliefs.

In Phoenix, local laws bar businesses open to the public from discriminating based on sexual orientation.

City attorneys will argue that by opening their stationary story, Brush & Nib Studio, in Phoenix, they agreed to follow the law.

The justices will rule whether the city’s ordinance is unenforceable, at least in the case involving the two business owners.
