Employment Authorization Card Holders Now Entitled To Arizona Drivers' Licenses

Gov. Doug Ducey has given up his fight to bar deferred Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival recipients from getting Arizona drivers’ licenses.

After years of fighting the issue, Ducey announced this week: effective immediately, anyone who has an Employment Authorization Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security is entitled to a state driver's license.

This ends Ducey’s appeal of a 2018 court ruling requiring the state issue licenses to anyone federally allowed in the country.

A spokesperson for the governor says the state Department of Transportation made the call.

ADOT estimates the state has spent nearly $370,000 in legal expenses fighting the issue since it was first challenged under then-Gov. Jan Brewer.
