The Arizona Legislature is looking to improve road safety standards during its upcoming session. One local business is looking at changing road technology to improve safety.
Earlier this month, Phoenix-based ON Semiconductor announced a partnership with 3M that will help cars communicate with roads. It’s a sensing technology designed to increase road safety, improve navigation and create an autonomous vehicle with safety capabilities that outperform human capabilities. “If you have a lane change sensing sensor, it basically helps you make sure you don’t change lanes in an unsafe way. So it’s really, actually giving you more control by using technology to give you more safety,” he said.
Gutmann says this road-sensing technology is the next phase in building connected cars.
"In many cases it’s focusing on providing more safety rather than releasing the control of the functions. And that’s just the chip that will really make your car slow down if you are getting too close to an object."
The technology was on display during the Consumer Electronics Show this month in Las Vegas.
