LIBRE Initiative Brings DREAMers To D.C. To Push For Bipartisan Solutions

Wednesday, the LIBRE Initiative — an organization founded by the conservative Koch brothers that works for immigration reform — sent a group of 40 DREAMers to Washington, D.C. to push for a permanent solution for young people like them, who were brought to this country illegally when they were children, as well as funds for border security.

Elias Garcia Gonzalez is a DACA student from Arizona who came here from Mexico with his parents when he was just one year old. He was one of those DREAMers who lobbied Congress with the LIBRE Initiative on Wednesday.

He said he would probably fall in the middle of the spectrum politically, and he wishes politics could be taken out of the equation. But when it comes to striking a deal for DREAMers, he — unlike some other DACA students — thinks lawmakers should meet in the middle.

The LIBRE Initiative has been working for some time to get a permanent solution for DREAMers, but the bipartisan spending deal the president is considering right now to avoid another government shutdown does not include a fix for DREAMers, and that was not welcome news to LIBRE Initiative President Daniel Garza.
