'When The Schoolhouse Becomes A Jailhouse:' Book Explores Surveillance In Schools

Since the 1990s when Columbine High School in Colorado became the site of America's first major school shooting, the issue of school violence and school safety, by extension, has dominated politics.

With that has come an explosion of technology aimed at the surveillance of students, whether it’s with security cameras, metal detectors or a whole slew of other, sometimes experimental, approaches.

But according to Annette Fuentes, this kind of technology and oversight doesn't always make schools safer — or even make students feel safer.

Fuentes is a journalist and the author of the book “ Lockdown High: When the Schoolhouse Becomes a Jailhouse,” and The Show spoke with her more about it.
