A bill moving through the Arizona House could give landlords the power to evict tenants who pay their rent with help from housing vouchers, nonprofits and churches. The bill moved out of committee this week.
House Bill 2358 was introduced by Republican Rep. Ben Toma of Peoria at the request of the Arizona Multihousing Association — a trade group for the apartment industry.
Currently, tenants who pay with vouchers are protected from eviction under Arizona law. The bill’s supporters said that this means landlords cannot evict someone for issues like domestic violence.
But opponents said the bill’s language is vague and does more to protect landlords than tenants.
Jerod MacDonald-Evoy, a reporter for the Arizona Mirror, joined The Show to talk about the bill.
