Under a bill moving through the Arizona Legislature, schools would be allowed to reward teachers whose students pass Advanced Placement exams.
House Bill 2176 would create the option for incentives of $450 for teachers in schools where more than half the students are eligible for free or reduced price lunches and $300 for teachers in schools where less than half are eligible.
Rep. Jeff Weninger, a Chandler Republican, is the bill’s sponsor. The Arizona House has given the bill its approval, which means it’s now in the Senate.
But some experts have criticisms of AP courses and tests — criticisms regarding both student access to the courses and the content itself.
