A Hostless Oscars Brings Surprises, Activism To The Stage

After a lot of hype and worry, it turns out that the Oscars don't need a host.

That’s the general feeling among many film critics after Sunday night’s 91st Academy Awards. Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler presented the opening monologue and singer Adam Lambert joined the surviving members of Queen to open the ceremony with rousing renditions of the band’s greatest hits.

The big winners were "Green Book" and "Bohemian Rhapsody."

"Green Book" won three awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. "Bohemian Rhapsody’s" Rami Malek took home the prize for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury. In his acceptance speech he pointed out that audiences want to see more diverse stories like Mercury’s.

Olivia Coleman won Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in "The Favourite."

"Roma" was one of the most talked about films this year and it was nominated for several categories including Best Foreign Film and Best Picture. It was a shoe-in for Best Foreign film and the movie’s director Alfonso Cuarón won the Best Director award.

Spike Lee finally won his Oscar in Best Adapted Screenplay for "BlacKkKlansman." After jumping into the arms of presenter Samuel L. Jackson, Lee delivered an emotional acceptance speech that touched on Black History Month and slavery in America.

Perhaps one of the most surprising wins of the night was the winner for Best Original Score. The Oscar went to Ludwig Göransson for "Black Panther." The first-time Oscar-nominee and winner paid tribute to all the African artists who worked with him on the music.
