The Arizona Supreme Court has ruled it’s OK to tax rental cars in order to pay for sports facilities in the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
Monday’s ruling upholds the current system, which provides more than $14 million a year to the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority.
The Show spoke with the agency’s president and CEO, Tom Sadler, about the decision.
In an emailed statement, an attorney for one of the car rental companies that filed suit said, “the taxpayers have welcomed the opportunity to test the validity of this tax in our trial and appellate courts over the past 14 years. They respect the decision of our supreme court today. Over the coming weeks, the taxpayers will evaluate whether to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take up their federal challenge to the tax."
