A decision last year to change the way the Maricopa Community College District negotiated with its faculty was politically motivated, according to a report released Thursday from the American Association of University Professors. Several of the actions criticized in the report have been rescinded by a new governing board.
In February 2018, the governing board voted to eliminate a decades-long “meet and confer” practice between district faculty and the board.
According to the report, the policy served as a process for establishing institutional policies related to faculty matters, and for making recommendations on salary and budgetary matters.
The report alleges some board members violated district policies and those actions were politically motivated. It also noted that three new members were elected in November and several of the changes have been rescinded
In response, the district addressed many of the concerns the association had raised, “ including faculty participation in creation of faculty policies.”
