A new story out of San Diego is raising questions about press freedom in the United States.
A supposed whistleblower inside the Department of Homeland Security leaked screenshots of a secret database labeled, “San Diego Sector,” to reporters at NBC-7 in San Diego.
In it, the personal information for journalists, attorneys and social media influencers are posted in mugshot form. This SharePoint document was accessible by San Diego-sector Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol, ICE, even the FBI — and not because the people on the list were involved in any criminal investigations.
Tom Jones is executive investigative producer at NBC-7 in San Diego, and he’s been working on this story.
