Biologist Jorge Urban announced in a tweet Wednesday that there could be fewer than 22 vaquita marina porpoises left in the Sea of Cortez. That’s down from about 30 recorded two years ago.
He also tweeted that unless new actions are taken, the vaquita marina could be extinct in a matter of months.

Urban is a member of the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita that’s expected to release a new report on the little porpoise.
“What they know is that there are now less vaquita than the previous report that was two years ago," said Alejandro Olivera, spokesperson for the Center for Biological Diversity in Mexico.
He said it’s bad news that the vaquita’s numbers have dropped. He added that he's waiting to draw further conclusions until the official report with recommendations is released.
