MEXICO CITY — One of the oldest advocacy organizations in the U.S. is leading one of the first American groups to meet face-to-face with the recently inaugurated Mexican president. It wants to help strengthen the ties between the U.S. and Mexico.
About 50 members from the American Jewish Committee (AJC), are in Mexico City, along with Mexican-American guest leaders. They are meeting with top officers from Mexico, including president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“He is seeing us as important interlocutors,” said Dina Siegel Vann, the AJC’s director for Latino and Latin American Affairs.
Seigel Vann said the group wants to advocate for Mexican-Americans and immigrants from the Latino diaspora living in the United States.
“We want to make sure that this government, as other governments have done before, continue considering the Mexican-American community an important asset”, Siegel Vann said.
Siegel Vann explained the AJC and its guests will discuss the relationship between Mexico, the U.S. and Israel, in spite of the Mexican and American administrations’ current focus on domestic issues.
“We understand that the priorities (for the Mexican government) are domestic, like fighting corruption and fighting poverty, and we want to be supportive, but we also hope that Mexico continues to be a global player and a regional player,” Siegel Vann said.
