Arizona’s congressional Democrats have warned President Donald Trump’s plan to shut down the U.S. border is unconstitutional.
U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego said punishing immigrants at the peril of all legal traffic cuts off the U.S. from Central American trade.
He and fellow Arizona Democrat Greg Stanton see it as a tactic designed to divert money to fund Trump’s border wall.
“He’s going to try to go around congressional action to get resources, an appropriation, if you will, for things that wasn’t appropriated by congress,” said the Freshman Representative, “that’s not acceptable and that’s not how our democratic process works.”
If that’s the case, the Democrats are preparing.
Many of us are going to start writing into our different authorizing bills ways to restrict this type of funds sweep,” Gallego revealed, “because we now know there’s a President that’s going to be irresponsible, we’re not going to allow them to have as much power in the future.”
Stanton said if Trump insists on challenging the constitution Democrats will take it before the U.S. Supreme Court.
