A group of women from northern Mexico participated in entrepreneurship classes hosted by the University of Arizona and U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Mexico. On Saturday, they’ll present their projects at a trade show.

These 33 women will be the first cohort to graduate from the McGuire Mexico Scholars program. It’s focused on empowering women with the skills they need to become business leaders, said U-S Consul Virginia Staab.

“It’s such a great vibe from these women. They’re dreaming bigger," she said.

During the eight week course, they developed businesses in areas including ecotourism, hospitality and technology. And they’ll present those businesses at a trade show and graduation ceremony Saturday from noon to 6:30 p.m. at the Nogales Museum of Art in Sonora.

Staab said she hopes the women are leaving the program not only with a business, but with the skills to become financially independent and relieve economic stress at home.
