Chandler-based Bashas’ recently opened its first new grocery store in a decade.
Bashas’ Diné Market store in Sanders, Arizona, becomes the grocer’s 8th location on the Navajo Nation. Diné means “the people” in the Navajo language.
Since opening its first store on the reservation in 1982, Bashas’ says it has supported education, nutrition, art, and health through community programs and partnerships.
The stores cater to the community by offering products like fresh mutton and Navajo tacos made with traditional fry bread. Store signs are in the native language and Bashas’ says at least 95 percent of employees at Diné Markets are Native American.
Bashas’ has three stores located on other reservations across Arizona. In all, the company has 58 Bashas’ and Bashas’ Diné stores, 11 AJ’s Fine Foods, and 46 Food City stores.
