2018 Saw An Increase In Attempts To Censor LGBTQ Books, According To The American Library Association

The American Library Association has released its annual report on the state of America’s libraries. It shows the important and growing role libraries play in communities through public programming like technology training.

But 2018 also saw an increase in attempts to censor LGBTQ books and programming in libraries.

The report includes a list of the most challenged books of the year — meaning patrons filed a formal complaint with a library or school, requesting that certain materials be removed. The number one most challenged book on the list was " George" by Alex Gino — the main character is a transgender child.

To talk about this, the Show was joined by Deborah Caldwell Stone, the interim director of the association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom.
