As thousands of migrants continue to arrive at the U.S. border seeking asylum, and President Donald Trump ramps up his rhetoric and policies attempting to stem illegal and legal immigration, research from the London School of Economics took a broader historical view on the phenomenon.
Sandra Sequeira and her fellow researchers looked at the “ age of mass migration” in the United States, which spanned from 1850 to 1920. At the time, about 30 million immigrants from Europe came to the United States and settled across the country.
They wanted to know about long-term implications of that settlement of these immigrants up until modern times.
The Show spoke with Sequeira about what they found out about these immigrants' ongoing impact on the communities where they settled.
