Arizona lawmakers approved new mandates to improve school safety Wednesday.
Republican Nancy Barto helped convince colleagues the bill would implement school district requirements for documenting and reporting potentially dangerous activities on a campus.
But Democrats, like Rep. Isela Blanc, believe it does not address the root of the problem if it does not improve the teacher-to-student ratio.
She said safety would be better served if there were "smaller classroom sizes. Ensuring that they have to instructional assistance, counselors, social workers."
"Of course we don't want to address those issues because it would require too much investment in children," Blanc said.
Other Democrats chided GOP members for claiming they're for public safety on school campuses, yet voting earlier this year to allow loaded weapons in people's cars on campus.
The measure now goes to the Gov. Doug Ducey's desk.
