You may remember her. A lively centenarian from Prescott who got to call the votes alongside Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego at the Democratic National Convention in 2016.
“Arizona cast 34 votes for Sen. Sanders, and 51 votes for the next President of the United States of America, Hillary Rodham Clinton!”
Geraldine “Jerry" Emmett became something of a phenom when she made that appearance in 2016. She was born in 1914 before women had the right to vote, and she was 104 years old when she passed away this week.
Emmett had been the honorary chair of the state’s delegation to the convention, and knew that she had to be there when there was a chance for a woman to win the nomination.
Emmett was loved in the state’s Democratic circles and, when she had the chance to cast her ballot for Hillary Rodham Clinton for president in Gilbert that year, people cheered.
Her family told the Arizona Republic she passed of old age, surrounded by family.
