MEXICO CITY — It was an unusual shooting in a city just 50 miles away from Mexico City. It happened in daylight on the main square, and a few steps away from reporters doing interviews.
Two leaders from a local merchant union were shot to death on Wednesday in Cuernavaca, the capital city of the state of Morelos, Mexico.
The murders happened during a protest by street vendors outside City Hall. A cameraman and a protester were also wounded.
The alleged shooter was chased and arrested by the police. An ongoing investigation is looking for the causes of the assassination.
Morelos Gov. and former soccer legend Cuauhtémoc Blanco urged the federal government to help restoring the state’s safety.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed previous administrations, accusing them of abandoning young people like the alleged killer.
