Grand Canyon National Park staff will spray herbicide on invasive plants on the North Rim next week.
Grand Canyon staff will target patches of bulbous bluegrass, an invasive species, around the Grand Canyon Lodge and campground. The non-native bluegrass is considered an especially aggressive species and a threat to native plants. They’ve tried pulling the weeds but they keep coming back.
The plant has the potential to spread quickly, especially in places like the North Rim that are wet in winter and early spring.
Park staff will flag the sprayed areas and keep clear of occupied campsites. The herbicide was approved in an environmental assessment in 2009.
