MEXICO CITY — The Department of Treasury is sanctioning a former Mexican governor and a magistrate judge accused of corruption and links to drug cartels.
Magistrate Judge Isidro Avelar and former governor of Nayarit state, Roberto Sandoval, have been linked to the Jalisco Nueva Generación and Los Cuinis cartels.
Avelar and Sandoval face accusations of receiving bribes from the drug trafficking organizations in exchange for political favors.
The Treasury Department also designated six Mexican individuals and entities linked to Sandoval’s illicit activities.
The U.S. government will block any property or interests from Avelar and Sandoval in the United States.
In a statement, the Treasury expressed its interest to continue helping Mexico in its fight against corruption.
