The Sonoran branch of the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM in Spanish) and its roughly 130,000 members are threatening to walk off their jobs at 2,000 businesses on July 8. That is, unless there are improvements in federal health and housing services.
“We’re prioritizing dialogue and the building of agreements,” said Javier Villarreal, secretary general of the union. But if that dialogue isn’t fruitful, Villarreal told KJZZ the union would strike.
Business leaders in the state say such a strike would be illegal and would also threaten investment.
The head of the state’s export manufacturing organization said progress is already being made on improving health services in Sonora.
